Kennedy Noelle Swann

KennedyKennedy was born on December 2, 2009 at 10:36 PM at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. She weighed in at 5 lbs. 1 oz. and measured 17.75" long. She is baby #2 for the Swann family, which includes Jennifer (Schlotterbeck) Swann (mom), Thomas "Christian" Swann (dad), and Jacob Swann (big brother).

Though born a month early, Kennedy's only health issue was a bit of jaundice. Mom first noticed some muscle weakness when Kennedy was about two months old. She was diagnosed with hypotonia (weak muscles) in April and has been in physical therapy several times a week since then.

By August, though progress had been made with the therapy, she stopped gaining weight. Several important tests were run in August 2010 attempting to understand the weak muscles and lack of weight gain, including a sleep apnea test. The results of this test prompted a visit to a pediatric neurologist and geneticist to continue seeking answers. Blood tests and other studies were then ordered and performed.

By early September 2010, Kennedy saw a neuromuscular specialist, who initially diagnosed her with a genetic disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Type I. Specialized blood work confirmed the diagnosis on September 9, 2010 and that is when Team Kennedy formed.
